PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Teen Square is a program for high school seniors in Leon County who are interested in politics and government. It is sponsored by the local nonprofit The Village Square, organized by a bipartisan group of community leaders concerned with reviving a constructive community dialog across the partisan divide. For more information, visit The Village Square online at
http://www.tothevillagesquare.org/teen-square
Students who are selected will earn a minimum of 25 hours of public service credit hours for college.
Teen Square is a forum that meets through the year to follow the season topic of The Village Square's quarterly dinner series "Dinner at the Square." The 2010-2011 season will address the causes and ramifications of today's angry partisan political divide. Please
check back with us to learn specific dinner topics at a later date.
Selection for the program is based on academic excellence, extracurricular involvement, and leadership potential. Applicants are required to have a minimum 3.5 unweighted GPA and obtain written consent of their parent/guardian(s). Students should be able to work constructively with peers who differ from them and must commit to attend, if selected, all meetings on the following date and times (all meetings at
St. John's Episcopal Church downtown):
Thursday August 26, 2010 5:30 to 7:30 PM
Thursday December 9, 2010, 5:30 to 7:30 PM
Thursday February 17, 2011, 5:30 to 7:30 PM
Thursday April 21, 2011 5:30 to 7:30 PM, FINAL MEETING
Additionally, there will be 3 Tuesday night “Dinner at the Square” meetings that participants will be requested to attend and help with to complete their hour requirement. We will post these dates online and in this application once they are firm. If any of these dates does not work, the participant can choose an alternate Tuesday night “Take-out Tuesday” forum to attend (there are usually many date choices), to fulfill the obligation of 3 events. If you are never available on Tuesday nights, however, you cannot participate in Teen Square.
